Deciding on a Location, Location, Location!

Whether you’re thinking about starting your own practice or working as an associate, deciding on a location will look quite similar.  Now, I’m not talking about the exact location of the practice (we will touch on that another time) but rather the area in which you will be working.

There are many variables that come into play when deciding where it is that you want to start and/or build your career.

Rural or city? Suburb or metropolitan?

Some say find the right opportunity and then make the rest work for you.

Others say find the right location first.

Similar to deciding which stream you want to pursue, I believe, this decision should be largely dependent on you. There is no right or wrong, there is only what’s right for you or in this case, where’s right for you.  In order to determine this, you must first know who you are and what it is that you value.

Where Was Right For Us

For us, we are planning to build a practice and also a life together.  To do this, we needed a place that would suit our needs for both.  A place where we could see our business thrive as well as a place we could call home for our future family.

We knew Guelph would be that place.

Guelph is home.  Both of my parents immigrated here when they were children.  It wasn’t easy but they found each other and created a beautiful life here. Growing up, all I ever knew was Guelph and I so badly just wanted to get out and see what else was out there.  When leaving for university, I was convinced I was NEVER moving back…oh, how naive I was!

Guelph is pretty darn awesome.

While I was gone, I grew such a great appreciation for the city that I was born and raised in.  On numerous occasions, when asked where I was from, the response would be so so positive.

Now, I know I am a bit biased, but Andrew has come to realize this as well over the course of our relationship.  We’ve been living here for less than a month but we already have a great feeling about where we’ve chosen to grow our practice and build our beautiful life.

Drew downtown guelph, deciding on a location

Guelph has a strong sense of community and unwavering support of local businesses.  As future small business owners, we can appreciate the need to support other hard-working business owners in our community and are so excited to discover this city from this perspective.  From the Guelph Farmers Market to the dining district formed downtown as a response to COVID to our local F45 Studio, we are so happy to be here and be apart of it all.

Knowing Your Values When Deciding On A Location

Deciding on a location is a big decision. Perhaps you can already tell that family is amongst my core values.

When we lean into our values and allow them to guide our decisions, we bring more fulfillment, peace, and happiness into our lives.

Take a moment to pause and think about your core values.  It might be difficult to narrow it down to just 3. If you are having difficulties, I’ve made a Core Value Tool to help you determine what they are.  I highly encourage you to try this exercise. Even if you think you know what they are, you may surprise yourself!
